Primary Care in Cumberland, MD

Comprehensive Family Medicine Services

Highland Healthy Living is a family medicine practice on Seton Drive, and we look after just about everyone: newborns, teenagers, working adults, and folks well into their eighties. You'll see April Dawson every visit. Not a rotating cast, not whoever's free.

She's been doing this for more than 25 years, so by your second or third appointment she knows your history without reading it off a screen. We're taking new patients right now.

Mon to Fri, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Walk-ins welcome during office hours
What We Offer

Core Primary Care Services

One provider who knows your full history, for routine visits, ongoing conditions, and everything in between.

Primary Care & Annual Physicals

If it's been a few years since your last physical, you're in good company and nobody here is going to lecture you about it. We'll go through your history, check your vitals, review everything you're taking, and order bloodwork during the same visit so you're not making a second trip. Bring a list of your medications. We're taking new primary care patients now.

Telehealth & Virtual Visits

For follow-ups, refills, a rash you'd rather not drive across town for, and the questions that don't need a waiting room. You get April on video, not whoever's next in a national call queue. Some things still need you here: physicals, bloodwork, anything hands-on. We'll tell you straight away which is which.

Chronic Disease Management

Diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid, cholesterol, asthma, COPD. The conditions that don't get solved in one visit and need someone paying attention over years, not minutes. We'll check in about every three months and keep track of what you already tried, so you're not repeating it.

Medical Weight Management

You've tried the diets. Maybe your knees are complaining, or your blood sugar's creeping up, or you're just tired of it. We start by looking underneath: thyroid, metabolism, and the medications you're already on, because sometimes that's the whole story. Then we build something that fits the life you actually have.

Weight management

Pediatric & Adolescent Care

Newborns through eighteen. Well-child visits, vaccines on schedule, school forms, and the mornings your kid wakes up wrong and you need somebody today. Worth knowing: every UPMC primary care office near here only sees patients 18 and older. We see your whole family. One practice, one waiting room, one phone number.

Sports & School Physicals

Your kid needs a form signed before the season starts. Bring the school's paperwork and we'll do the exam and fill it out while you wait. If something turns up, and occasionally something does, you're already sitting in a real doctor's office instead of a folding chair in a gym. July and August book up fast.

Senior & Geriatric Care

For patients on Medicare and anyone juggling several conditions and several prescribers at once. We go through every medication looking for interactions nobody's caught, check fall risk honestly, and coordinate with your specialists so you're not the one carrying messages between offices.

Senior care

Women's Health

Well-woman visits, contraception, menopause, and the concerns you'd rather not explain twice to two different people. Same provider, same room, same person who already knows your history. You're not starting over.

Women's health

Pap Smear & Screenings

Cervical cancer screening, whether you're on schedule or years overdue. Overdue is more common than you'd think and it isn't a problem here. We do it in the office as part of a regular visit, so it isn't a separate appointment somewhere else on another day.

Pap smear testing

Ear Wax Removal

Your ear feels plugged, sounds are muffled, and the cotton swab made it worse. We remove it safely in the office, usually the same visit you come in, and most people notice the difference before they've stood up.

Internal Medicine

Adult primary care with a focus on the complicated cases: several chronic conditions at once, medications that interact, and problems that need a bit of detective work. If you're looking for an internist near you in Cumberland, this is that.

Walk-In Clinic

Sick today, can't wait until Thursday, and you'd rather not explain your whole history to a stranger at an urgent care. Walk in during office hours and you'll see the provider who already has your chart open, in the same clinic where you get everything else.

Insurance and Your First Visit

The two things people call to ask about most, answered before you have to pick up the phone.

Insurance and payment

  • Medicare
  • Medicaid
  • CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • United Healthcare

Medicaid is worth calling out, because plenty of practices around here don't take it and people assume we don't either. We do.

If you don't see your plan, call the office and we'll check it before you come in. See the full insurance list.

Your first visit

Bring these:

  • Your insurance card and a photo ID
  • A list of everything you take, including vitamins and anything over the counter
  • Any records you already have in hand

Plan on about 40 minutes. April goes through your history properly, which takes longer than you're probably used to. If you're coming from another practice, we'll request your records for you.

Afterward, set up the patient portal for messages, results, and refills, so you're not on hold for a question that takes 30 seconds. Already registered? Sign in here.

Meet April Dawson, MSN, APRN, FNP-C

April is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 25 years of clinical experience, and she's the provider you'll see at every visit. She treats patients of every age, from first well-child checks through geriatric care.

Patients have rated the practice 4.9 out of 5 across 35 reviews. What comes up most often isn't the medicine, it's that she listens and doesn't rush. If you've spent years being handed off between providers who had to re-read your chart every time, that's the part worth knowing. More about our practice.
