Walk-In Clinic in Cumberland, MD

Need to be seen today? Walk in Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. New patients welcome. Medicare and Medicaid accepted.

You woke up feeling awful and you don't have an appointment. That's fine. You can walk into Highland Healthy Living at 909 A Seton Drive in Cumberland and we'll see you.

We take walk-in patients during clinic hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You don't need to be an existing patient, and you don't need to call first, although calling ahead at (240) 880-3220 does help us tell you how busy we are before you make the drive.

No Appointment Necessary: What to Expect

Come in, check in at the front desk, and let them know you're a walk-in. Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you've got one, and a list of your current medications, including the over-the-counter things and supplements people usually forget to mention.

Walk-ins are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, and they're worked in around scheduled appointments. What that means in practice is that your wait depends on the day. Monday mornings and the stretch right after a holiday tend to be the busiest, for reasons that won't surprise anyone. Mid-week afternoons are usually calmer.

We're not going to pretend there's never a wait. There sometimes is. But you're being seen by a real primary care provider, not processed through a conveyor belt, and if the visit turns into something that needs follow-up, you've already got somewhere to follow up.

Conditions We Treat on a Walk-In Basis

Walk-in visits cover the everyday, non-emergency problems that come up without warning:

  • Colds, flu, sore throats, and coughs that have overstayed their welcome
  • Sinus infections and ear infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Rashes, skin irritations, and pink eye
  • Minor sprains and strains
  • Stomach bugs, nausea, and digestive upset
  • A blood pressure reading that suddenly looks wrong
  • A medication that isn't sitting right with you
  • A chronic condition that's flared up and needs a look

If you're not sure whether what you've got belongs here, call (240) 880-3220 and ask. Nobody minds the question, and it beats guessing.

When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead

Some things don't belong at a walk-in clinic, and trying to handle them here wastes time you may not have. Call 911 or go straight to the nearest emergency room if you have:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Signs of a stroke: sudden weakness on one side, facial drooping, or trouble speaking
  • Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
  • A serious head injury or suspected broken bone
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • High fever with confusion or a stiff neck
  • Thoughts of harming yourself

Don't drive to us and don't wait to see if it passes. Go. Anything short of that, and we can almost certainly take care of you here.

Walk-In Hours and Wait Times

Walk-in hours run Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We're closed Saturday and Sunday, so if something comes up over the weekend and it genuinely can't wait until Monday, urgent care or the emergency room is the right call.

Wait times vary and we'd rather be honest about that than promise a number we can't hold to. If you want a realistic read before you leave the house, call the front desk. They'll tell you how the morning's going.

If your problem can wait a day or two, booking a same-day or next-day appointment usually gets you in and out faster than walking in. You can schedule online in a couple of minutes.

Insurance and Self-Pay

We accept most insurance plans for walk-in visits, including Medicare and Medicaid. Bring your card if you have it.

If you're uninsured or you'd rather pay out of pocket, talk to the front desk. It's a normal conversation and nobody's going to be strange about it. Call (240) 880-3220 ahead of time if you want to sort out cost before you come in.

Why Walk In Here Instead of an Urgent Care?

The real difference is what happens after the visit.

An urgent care patches the immediate problem and sends you on. There's nothing wrong with that, and sometimes it's exactly what you need. But nobody there knows your history, the visit doesn't connect to anything, and if the problem comes back in three weeks you're starting over with another stranger.

Walking into a primary care clinic gives you the same speed with continuity attached. The visit goes in your chart. If you need labs, a follow-up, or a referral, that's arranged by a provider who'll still be here next month. And if you're not already established with us, a walk-in visit is a perfectly good way to start. Plenty of our regular patients showed up the first time because they were sick and needed somebody that day.

April Dawson, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, has more than 25 years of clinical experience, and the practice runs at 4.9 stars across 35 reviews.

Would You Rather Schedule?

If your problem can wait, a booked slot is usually faster than walking in. See our primary care clinic page or book online.
